![]() You’ve probably heard of decibels (or dB) before-that’s the logarithmic unit of measurement to determine loudness. To understand how dishwashers went from being about as loud as a vacuum cleaner to being so quiet they wouldn’t get kicked out of a library, we first need to talk about dBA (decibel A-weighting). Most stainless-steel dishwashers will have dBA levels below 50, which you won’t be able to hear from outside the room, and inside the room it should only be a low white-noise sound. If you want to skip all the science and get to the recommendations of the best quiet dishwashers that also clean well, we’ve got you covered. We’ve tested hundreds of dishwashers in the Reviewed labs, and one question we've pondered often is “What is considered a quiet dishwasher?” While we don't measure it ourselves due to the specialized space required for accurate readings, we do consider it as a data point for every dishwasher we test. It’s not completely silent, but also not loud enough to wake someone up. Where older models averaged about 60 decibels-just below the sound level of a vacuum-modern dishwashers average between 40 to 50 decibels, which is about as loud as typing on a keyboard. More recently, however, the dishwasher space has changed. If you’ve ever wondered why an old dishwasher was almost as loud as your garbage disposal, it’s because it was using one. Very few had any features designed to muffle the sounds coming from inside, and the sounds themselves were louder due to their built-in macerators. Of course, if you keep your freezer in the basement or garage you won't give a hoot about the noise.Twenty or 30 years ago, dishwashers were far from quiet. In our freezer tests, we found two upright and three chest freezers that earned excellent scores for noise including the upright Frigidaire FFU17M7H, $600 and a CR Best Buy, and the Frigidaire Gallery FGCH25M8L chest freezer, $700. Self-defrosting freezers tend to be noisier than models with manual defrost. But keep in mind that if you have a convection oven, the fan tends to be noisy so you may not want to use that feature when company is gathered around the kitchen island. So quiet enough.Ĭooking equipment is typically quiet so we don't test ranges and wall ovens for noise. None of our countertop microwaves get top marks for noise but two large models, the LG LCRT2010, $200, and the GE Profile JES2251SJ, $280, were very good. In our tests of over-the-range microwaves, three out of four picks got excellent scores for noise including two models from GE and the LG LMH2235ST, $450. ![]() ![]() Microwaves can make a racket but fortunately the noise comes in bursts as you cook and isn't sustained. Two in our tests were super quiet including the GE Profile PCR06WAT, $1,400, undercounter wine chiller, and the Frigidaire FFWC42F5LS, $400, freestanding wine chiller. Wine chillers are often placed in the kitchen or in a nearby bar so you'll appreciate one that's quiet and keeps its cool. Side-by-side: Four of five top picks earned excellent noise scores including the top-rated side-by-side Samsung RS25H5121SR, $1,900, and the Bosch Linea 800 B22CS80SN, $2,700.Top freezer: None of our top top-freezer picks earned excellent noise scores but four of our 12 recommended models were very good for noise including the Whirlpool WRT771REY, $1,100, and the Haier HT21TS45SW, $800.Conventional bottom freezer: Our top four picks earned excellent marks for quietness including three models from Kenmore that range in price from $950 to $1,510, and the LG LDC24370ST, $1,650.Three-door bottom freezer: 13 of our top picks earned excellent scores for noise including the LG LFX32945ST, $3,000, and the Kenmore 7160, $1,700, a CR Best Buy.Four door bottom freezer: Two of four top picks were excellent including the Samsung Chef Collection RF34H9960S4, $5,400, and the Samsung T9000 RF32FMQDBSR, $3,500.Here are the quietest of each configuration. The quietest models tended to be bottom-freezer and side-by-side models. But in our refrigerator tests, some were noisy enough to put a chill on the conversation. Normally, you don't think of a refrigerator as being noisy as it purrs along day-after-day.
